Water - our most precious material
The no. 1 foodstuff!
The facts
97.5 % of the world's water resources are
in the oceans in the form of seawater – it can NOT
be used as drinking water or service water!
2.5 % remains as fresh water; from that, 70 % are stuck
in the ice sheets in the poles.
People are only able to directly use 0.007 % of the water
on the Earth as drinking water!
The topic of drinking water is more acute than ever before: almost daily, one hears and reads in the media about the general drinking water shortages; even about wars in some countries that are fought over this vital raw material.
In many regions of our earth, clean drinking water is a real luxury: approximately 1.1 billion people do not have adequate access to fresh water; they are not sufficiently provided for. In the prosperous regions, on the other hand, the water is often wasted (unconsciously or deliberately). Most people are not aware of the volatile nature and urgency of this topic because in our daily lives, drinking water in high quality and purity is available to us at all times and everywhere.
The most varied studies prove how unequally the water resources are distributed across the earth and how it is exactly the rich countries such as USA and Europe that handle it so carelessly. According to the Vereinigung Deutsche Sanitärwirtschaft, during the past 50 years worldwide water consumption has increased six fold. Even to just satisfy the basic needs, a person from the west needs 20-50 litres of clean drinking water every day. In Germany, the average water consumption per day and per capita is as high as 129 litres, in the USA an unbelievable 295 litres – an alarming development because, drinking water will not be available to us forever and in unlimited quantities!
The upshot is, it is high time to rethink – and to see and protect the blue gold as our number one foodstuff.
